Role of 1.5T Magnetic Resonance Imaging in First Line Drug Resistant Epilepsy
نویسنده
چکیده
A seizure is defined as a paroxysmal alteration in neurologic function due to excessive electrical discharge from the central nervous system. Epilepsy is defined as a condition of recurrent seizures, and medical intractability as recurrent seizures despite optimal treatment under the direction of an experienced neurologist over a 2-3-year period. Many patients don’t respond to first line antiepileptic drugs. Many imaging modalities for investigating seizures are available like neurosonogram, computerized tomography (CT scan) of brain, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain, functional MRI, positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Of these various modalities MRI is most important modality for evaluation of structural disorders causing epilepsy. So, role of 1.5T MRI is evaluated in 102 patients with refractory epilepsy in age group 0-40 years.

Clinical Benefit of 3 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging Rescanning in Patients With Focal Epilepsy and Negative 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
BACKGROUND Magnetic resonance imaging is an essential tool in the pre-surgical evaluation of patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. OBJECTIVE Our aim was to assess the value of re-imaging patients with focal drug-resistant epilepsy. METHODS Thirty patients with negative or non-conclusive 1.5 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging were rescanned with 1.5T and 3T. All of them had previous 1.5 scans...
متن کاملPre-surgical epilepsy evaluation using 3T MRI. Do surface coils provide additional information?
PURPOSE To assess if 3T MRI can be further improved by adding surface coil imaging, in the context of detection and characterization of cerebral lesions in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. METHODS Twenty five patients with drug-resistant epilepsy undergoing evaluation for epilepsy surgery were examined with high resolution 3T MRI. The patients were MRI-negative (n = 15), or had unclear ...
متن کاملSingle-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and intractable epilepsy.
TAPANI TIKKAKOSKI Editor In patients with intractable epilepsy refractory to medication, surgical treatment may be needed. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an essential neuroimaging tool in assisting the identifi cation of epileptogenic lesions. MRI at 3T has been found to perform better than 1.5T in terms of image quality, detection of structural lesions, and characterization of lesions. Th...
متن کاملPresurgical Language Mapping in Patients With Intractable Epilepsy: A Review Study
Introduction: about 20% to 30% of patients with epilepsy are diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy and one third of these are candidates for epilepsy surgery. Surgical resection of the epileptogenic tissue is a well-established method for treating patients with intractable focal epilepsy. Determining language laterality and locality is an important part of a comprehensive epilepsy program befo...
متن کاملThe value of repeat neuroimaging for epilepsy at a tertiary referral centre: 16 years of experience☆
PURPOSE Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the investigation of choice for detecting structural lesions that underlie and may accompany epilepsy. Despite advances in imaging technology, 20-30% of patients with refractory focal epilepsy have normal MRI scans. We evaluated the role of repeated imaging with improved MRI technology - an increase in field strength from 1.5T to 3T and superior head ...
